McHenry grad Tonyan Jr. ready for final season at Indiana State
McHenry native Robert Tonyan Jr. is heading into his redshirt senior season at Indiana State University. It will be his second year as a team captain.
He’s also a physical education major who spent part of last spring student-teaching at an elementary school. Tonyan says he has found some similarities between leading a classroom full of children and a locker room full of peers.
“I know I’m playing with 20-year-olds or 21-year-olds, but if I can handle a group of second graders and first graders in a gymnasium, I think I can handle 21-year-olds on the field,” Tonyan said.
“How you do anything is the way you do everything. If i’m just super outgoing with all these kids, running around, helping them out, and I go to practice right after that with the same energy, running around and getting people motivated, I think that just carries over.”
Tonyan’s goal is to play professionally after college, and to that end, he has been training with Chris Leathers at Your World Fitness in Spring Grove this summer. Leathers also trains NFL players C.J. Fiedorowicz and Mike Liedtke, and Tonyan got the opportunity to run routes with them earlier this summer.
